Dallas Cowboys

Will the Dallas Cowboys choose Darren Mcfadden for the 2008 NFL Draft?

01/23/08
Would Jerry Jones Trade Up in the Draft to Get Darren McFadden?
This seems like a dumb idea: yesterday, Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning News ran a mailbag column and started with this:

CBoysfanPA: Do you agree that the Cowboys should give up a first-rounder for Roy Williams of Detroit fame?

Kevin Sherrington: Depends on which first-rounder you're talking about. I'm still not ruling out the possibility of packaging a deal to take Darren McFadden, the best player in the draft. If he falls to four or five, which some mock drafts show, Jerry will take a shot. Or should. If he doesn't, I wouldn't have a problem taking a flyer on the other Roy Williams. Or is he now the real Roy Williams?

Roy Williams I get, but why in the hell would the Cowboys trade up to draft Darren McFadden? Nothing against McFadden, this is more an indictment against drafting any running back with a top-5 pick. I know, I know, Dallas has two picks this year thanks to the Browns and Brady Quinn.

But running backs are pretty easy to replace -- look no further than the current roster. Julius Jones was the team's second-round pick in 2004, and a year later, they found some guy named Marion Barber ... in round 4. Barber didn't get his first start until the 2007 postseason, but he's clearly the best back on the team.

Cedric Benson and Cadillac Williams are two top-5 examples. One's a chronic underachiever and the other's career could be over after a serious knee injury. The Cowboys have drafted pretty well recently and I can't imagine they'd give up so much to take a guy they don't really need. Even with two No. 1 picks in their pocket.
Comments
1. They need a shut-down corner. I am a Giants fan so i would LOVE to see them draft McFadden.
2. Yeah, trading one of the firsts for WR Roy Williams makes sense (especially since Leodis McKelvin's strong showing at the Senior Bowl practices confirms that he won't be on the board for the 22nd pick). But trading both firsts for D-Mac wouldn't be smart. Especially since Cory Boyd will be available in the fourth or fifth - him and Barber would add up to a real two-headed monster.
3. We need a Safety to replace Roy Williams, we need Corners to replace what we have now, and we need a big time wide reciever.
4. Love McFadden but he was the second best running back at Arkansas. Felix Jones is beigger, fast and will be abtter pro running back. The Cowbiys can draft Felix Jones in the late 1st round and also draft Mario manningham at wideout. As far as Db is concerned they will address that through free agnecy.

2. Dallas Cowboys: Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
Could Dallas fans be any more happy that Darren McFadden is still available at No. 6? They should be thank the Cleveland Browns' love of Brady Quinn for the next ten years every Sunday.
This is what walterfootball.com's Craig Smiths projects.

10 Players Most Responsible for the Dallas Cowboys' Success or Failure in 2012
The success of the 2012 Dallas Cowboys season is contingent upon a few things. Execution, discipline, game planning and, most of all, players will play a key role in taking the Cowboys to the playoff this season. The roster is full of talented players on both sides of the ball, such as Tony Romo and DeMarcus Ware. But there are other players on the roster who may not be as talented as Romo and ...

2012 NFC East Way-Too-Early Awards: The Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys might lack playoff wins (at least in the 21st century), but they certainly don't lack stars on both sides of the ball. That's why it's particularly fun to hand out insanely early awards to members of a team like this.  What's frustrating for the Cowboys and their fans is that individual awards are irrelevant. What use is gravy without meat and potatoes? And let's face it: fake ...

Dallas Cowboys: 5 Key X-Factors That Will Decide How Far Boys Go in 2012
No team is more unpredictable than the Dallas Cowboys . America’s Team enters every campaign with Super Bowl expectations. And those expectations aren’t foolish—they always look phenomenal on paper. Dallas Cowboys: Why Supporting Cast, Not Tony Romo, Is the Problem
In Dallas, where the Cowboys —America's Team!—have won only a single playoff game since the Clinton administration, there is indeed a problem. But the problem is not Antonio Ramiro Romo.  I get it. It's easy to point a finger at the quarterback when you're mired in a Super Bowl drought and a playoff slump, especially when you and your parents and grandparents became so accustomed to the team ...

Here are five key players that the Cowboys lost to free agency in the 2012 offseason.

Dallas Cowboys: The Huge Upgrade on the Defensive Line No One Is Discussing
The Dallas Cowboys are in the process of upgrading their defensive line. Still, most of the media and fan focus since the draft has been on what they didn't accomplish in this area. A large contingent of fans and pundits were calling for an elite pass-rusher to be taken with the first pick. When that didn't happen, many people assessed Tyrone Crawford, taken in the third round, as a ...

Predicting 5 Problem Spots for the Dallas Cowboys
After an aggressive free agency campaign and solid draft, the Dallas Cowboys ' offseason should be labeled as a success. But just because they replenished the roster and upgraded the talent level, does that mean a few problem areas could still exist? I think the answer to that question is a profound yes. The Dallas Cowboys will have some problem spots that if not properly addressed or rectified ...
