McFadden and Jones Headed To NFL Draft
Sure, Darren McFadden and Felix Jones said Monday they're ready to cash in their big pay day in the NFL draft, leaving Hog fans to remember the good ole days.
But before it becomes all swimming pools and movie stars for these two, Chad Hooten with hootens.com says there are still a few more hoops to jump through.
Between now and February, they'll interview with several teams," he said. "When they go to Indianapolis with 300 other players, they'll be working out for individual teams."
While the physical tools are undeniable, Hooten says it's the interviews with NFL management that could be the sticking point, especially for McFadden.
"There is a scuttle, and the word on Darren is that he could be a risk because of these off-the-field incidents," Hooten said.
Incidents like an alleged fight outside a Little Rock bar less than a week ago and a toe injury from a 2006 fight that threatened the two-time Heisman runner up's career.
Those could be $30 million questions, depending on how well he answers those questions and how well he convinces those managers he's a good sign for them," Hooten said.
Hooten's not exaggerating, especially when you look at the difference between the top draft picks from 2007.
The year's top pick, Jamarcus Russell, signed a $68 million contract with $32 million guaranteed. The fifth pick, Levi Brown, signed for $62 million with $18 million guaranteed. And the tenth pick, Amobi Okoye, he signed for $17 million with $12 million guaranteed.
Corliss Williamson, now an assistant with the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes, enjoyed a three-year stint with the Hogs and dozen years in the NBA.
His advice for McFadden is simple.
"Keep your nose clean. Work hard. Your focus in now," he said. "You work hard during the college year, but you never know what it's like to be a professional athlete."
It's a fraternity these two All-Americans will be introduced to in just a few short months.
